RoyStar SoundSick for VoyageLA
Today we’d like to introduce you to RoyStar SoundSick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us RoyStar. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story begins in 2011 Los Angeles after inking a record deal with Universal Music Group (via Canorous Records). We started coordinating and hosting events at little hotspots around Hollywood, all venues which have since changed their names. From that point there, it was a lot of networking, creating opportunities and making the most of them.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, the road has definitely been full of obstacles. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, and the industry is a tidal wave. You sign deals, invest time, money and energy into projects with the hope of a successful outcome, but there are no guarantees. To date, that has been the largest learning curve to navigate; intricately understanding the processes of both the business and artistic aspects of the entertainment industry. If you take a win, learn to keep that momentum and level up. If you take a loss, learn to hedge your bets and bounce back.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
The business is music and events; the company is SSEMG. We specialize in music production, live event coordination and nightlife promotion. Musically, we’re proud of the fact that all of our flagship artists have signed major label deals. In the events space, we’re proud of the fact that we have been an instrumental element for some the hottest events in Los Angeles in a five years time span. I would even go as far to say that we changed the landscape of how urban events in Hollywood were promoted and marketed. We’ve been set apart by our unique marketing approach to the industry, finding niches in our target markets and successfully capitalizing.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest moment would have to be my first time working with Method Man on BET’s Season 1 of Rebel. I grew up a huge Wu Tang fan so working with fam was a very cool moment.
